Department History

A 1952 Gibbs High graduate, Willie Gus Gore, served in the Army then became an SPPD Police Officer in 1959. He was our first Black Homicide Detective until he retired in 1980.

Det. Gore visited Chief Holloway in 2016 and shared an article he found from 1969 when he saved a woman after her car plunged into the bay off the Howard Frankland Bridge.

After he retired from here in 1980, he became a Court Bailiff and a Public Defender's Office Investigator for 15 years.

He was known throughout the community as a professional, a gentleman, kind, and genuine.
