Citizens Police Academy

The academy consists of eight (8) weeks of instruction. Classes will meet Tuesday evenings from 6:00 - 9:00 pm at the St. Petersburg Police Department, located at 1301 1st Avenue North. Attending this fun-filled interactive academy will give you insight into police work and you'll have fun along the way.

*Completion of this course does not provide any official certification.

Due to the sensitive nature of some of the topics, applicants will be subjected to a limited background check to determine their suitability. The check will be limited to criminal history and warrant information. The information will not be used for any other purposes nor shared with any other persons or entity.

The St. Petersburg Police Department has found that education has been most effective in gaining understanding and support from the community. The Citizens Police Academy offers citizens insights into how police officers perform their duties and how the department serves the community

The purpose of the Citizens Police Academy is to foster better communication between citizens and police through education. The academy creates a nucleus of well-informed citizens who possess greater insight into police practices and services.

Graduates of the academy are encouraged to share their knowledge and experiences with the community as the opportunity arises. Everyone benefits from enhancing citizen understanding of the role and function of their police department.

The academy consists of eight (8) weeks of instruction. Classes will meet Tuesday evenings from 6:00 - 9:00 pm at the St. Petersburg Police Department, located at 1301 1st Avenue North. This instruction is comprehensive, covering a different area of the police department each week. Certified police officers, supervisors, and civilian instructors, with particular expertise, will conduct each topic.

All classes are free.

Any interested citizen who resides or works in the City of St. Petersburg is encouraged to attend. Citizens involved with the community in some way, such as youth involvement, neighborhood watch, and neighborhood groups are very important to the academy.

Citizens 18 years of age or older.

NOTE: All applicants are subject to a criminal background check.

As the academy nears an anouncement will go out on both social media and the web site. At that time you will be able to complete an online application to apply to attend. You will also have the option of downloading a PDF version of the application which can be filled out and mailed in. An application can also be mailed to you by calling 893-7128 or can be picked up at The St. Petersburg Police Department.

Once you have completed the PDF version of the application please mail it to (or drop it off at) 1301 First Avenue North St. Petersburg, FL 33705. You can also email it to Chip.Wells@stpete.org. If you use the online form, nothing needs to be mailed in.
