For the first time since the 1920’s we have saddled up a Mounted Police Unit to enhance the police presence in the downtown area, especially on the weekends and during special events.
The Boston Police Department donated two of their trained, Percheron-Thoroughbred cross horses to our department after they disbanded their historic, mounted police program.
Our mounted police officers learn how to control their steeds under a variety of circumstances and to use their height and the large size of the horse as a tactical advantage in all situations. Interestingly, they are taught not to dismount during their patrol duties, not even while making an arrest.
