For the first time since the 1920’s we have saddled up a new Mounted Police Unit to enhance the police presence in the downtown area, especially on the weekends and during special events.
The Boston Police Department donated two of their trained, Percheron-Thoroughbred cross horses to our Department after they disbanded their historic, mounted police program this past summer.
Officer Ron Try’s new four-legged colleague is Brooklyn, and Officer Jason Hughes is partnered up with Jacob.
Officers Try and Hughes underwent several weeks of physically-demanding horse training provided by experienced mounted officers from both the Tampa Police Department and the Pinellas Park Police Department.
Our new mounted police officers learned how to control their steeds under a variety of circumstances and to use their height and the large size of the horse as a tactical advantage in all situations. Interestingly, they learned not to dismount during their patrol duties, not even while making an arrest.
