High Visibility Enforcement to Improve Pedestrian & Bicycle Safety Continues

02-03-20

To protect the most vulnerable road users, the St. Petersburg Police Department is participating in a statewide campaign to keep pedestrians, motorists, and bicyclists safe and reduce crashes on our busiest roads.

In the first three months of this campaign, St. Petersburg conducted 28 operations and gave the following citations:

  • Motorists- 120
  • Bicycle- 36
  • Pedestrian- 168

Working in partnership with the Institute for Police Technology and Management and The University of North Florida, designated officers will continue to patrol St. Petersburg's roadways and educate citizens on roadway rules and safety through High Visibility Enforcement (HVE).

For the next several months,(through May), education and enforcement efforts will be conducted along the following roadways:

  • 18th Avenue South
  • 34th Street
  • 4th Street
  • Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street
  • 5th Avenue North
  • Central Avenue
  • 1st Avenue North

This traffic safety initiative is part of the Florida Department of Transportation's, "Alert Today, Alive Tomorrow" campaign. FDOT in cooperation with IPTM awarded the police department a contract to provide an increased police presence in high traffic areas with the goal of reducing the number and severity of crashes.
