Preliminary autopsy findings indicate the victim suffered life-threatening dog bites to the neck and shoulder. There is no other indication of foul play at this time.
At 8:17 p.m. on Wednesday, October 14th, officers were called to the scene of a 52-year-old man who appeared to be seriously injured in the road in the 2500 block of Quincy Street South.
When officers arrived, they found the victim bleeding and lying in the road unresponsive. A medium-sized pit bull-mix dog was with him on a leash. The dog would not allow rescue workers to approach the victim. It became agitated and began to aggressively bite the victim; that's when an officer fired his weapon and killed the dog.
The victim was already deceased when rescue workers were able to get to him. Investigators learned the dog belonged to the victim.
