Release posted on 05-20-24 at 6:40 p.m.

A 10 grader at Gibbs High School, 850 34th St. S., was charged with having a gun on campus. Thanks to a tip, the handgun was found in the 16-year-old boy's backpack.

He did not make any threats against the school or anyone else. The student will have consequences at the school level and is charged with possession of a firearm on school property.

The St. Petersburg Police Department makes the safety of students a top priority and any weapon on campus, or other threat to school safety, will be thoroughly investigated. This serves as a reminder to students that the police department takes these matters very seriously and the consequences could be severe.
