Fatal Bicycle Involved Crash - 5th Avenue North and 16th Street

Release posted on 07-05-24 at 5:50 p.m.

Shortly after 7 a.m. today (07/05/2024), the driver of a red Dodge Journey struck a bicyclist at the intersection of 5th Avenue North and 16th Street. The bicyclist later died at a local hospital.

Before the crash, the Dodge was traveling eastbound on 5th Avenue North with a green light then attempted to make a southbound turn on to 16th Street North.

At the same time, the bicyclist identified as Juan Yhanes, age 83, (DOB 05/16/1941) of St. Petersburg, was crossing 16th Street North from an east to west direction in a marked crosswalk with the right of way.

The Dodge failed to yield and struck the bicycle. Yhanes was not wearing a helmet at the time

He was taken by ambulance to Orlando Health Bayfront Hospital with life-threatening injuries. Next of kin were notified.

The driver of the Dodge remained on scene and cooperated with the investigation.

The investigation remains open and active.
