Arrest: Fatal Motorcycle Hit and Run Crash

Last night, investigators were able to locate the jeep involved in a fatal motorcycle crash this weekend that killed Jonathan Hughes. Then, today at 2:30 p.m., Jakil Powell (DOB 7/29/2002, St. Petersburg, FL) turned himself in to police. He was identified as the driver of the Jeep Grand Cherokee and was arrested. He is charged with leaving the scene of a crash involving death. His booking photo is attached.

The investigation is ongoing.

At 3:30 p.m., Saturday, May 13, a Honda motorcycle being driven by Jonathan Hughes (12/09/1965, St. Petersburg, FL) was traveling westbound on 22nd Avenue South in the curb lane approaching 45th Street South.

A white Jeep Grand Cherokee, operated by an unknown driver, was traveling eastbound on 22nd Avenue South, in the median lane, attempting to make a northbound turn onto 45th Street South. The Jeep failed to yield the right of way and turned into the path of the motorcycle causing the crash. The Jeep left the scene of the crash.
