Homicide Investigation

Today, St. Petersburg Police Detectives charged Tommy Gene Stephens, DOB 10/13/1970, with the murder of 34-year-old Jona Waller. He is charged with 2nd-degree murder.

On March 17, 2023, Stephens met Waller in the alley south of 255 37th Street North. Stephens stabbed Waller and killed her. Her body was found that afternoon.

Through their investigation, detectives were able to identify Stephens, locate and arrest him.

St. Petersburg detectives are actively investigating the homicide of Jona Waller (DOB 09/01/1988) and need the public's help.

On 03/17/23 at approximately 4:15 p.m., police were called to the alley south of the 200 block of 37th Street North, where someone found a woman lying in the alley.

The victim has been identified as Jona Waller (DOB 09/01/1988).

On 03/17/23 at approximately 4:15 p.m. , police were called to the alley south of the 200 block of 37th Street North , where someone had found a woman lying in the alley.

She had been stabbed and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

An adult female victim was found deceased with upper body trauma in the 200-BLK of 37th Street North.

PIO is headed to the scene and will be available until 7pm at the corner of 3rd Avenue North and 37th Street North.
