Unveiling new names for SPPD's two new street patrol horses

Release posted on 05-23-22 at 6:13 p.m

With trusted police horses Brooklyn and Jacob ready to gallop into retirement, two new steeds have arrived at the St. Petersburg Police Department to take over their street patrol duties.

And with the new job comes new names for the newbies.

For the past week, students at six elementary schools in St. Petersburg have been participating in a naming contest. Students have been working in teams to come up with potential new names for the newest members of the SPPD Mounted Police Unit.

The unveiling of the winning names is set for 10:15 a.m. Tuesday (05/24/22) at Perkins Elementary School, 2205 18th Ave. S. in St. Petersburg.

The principal requests photographers to avoid airing the faces of students, if they are unable to get clearance from the prinicpal, a teacher, or the student's parent or guardian.

The St. Petersburg Police Department's Mounted Police Unit is a valuable asset to the police force to enhance the police presence in the downtown area, especially on the weekends and during special events.
