At 5:04 p.m., on March 20th, 2022, a red Mini Cooper was in the center lane of 1st Avenue South traveling east. A black Harley Davidson Street Glide driven by Elijah Cates (03/10/1981) was eastbound in the north curb lane of 1st Avenue South. The Mini Cooper changed lanes and made a northbound turn onto 30th Street South in front of Cates and the vehicles crashed.

Cates was transported to Bayfront Hospital and was pronounced deceased a short time later. The other driver, who was not injured, stopped and is cooperating with the investigation.
