Fatal Death Investigation

James A. Chin (DOB 12/24/1994) was arrested and charged with first degree murder in the stabbing and shooting death of Mitchell William Collins (DOB 11/19/1991). Collins and Chin were friends, but got into a physical altercation at Collins residence (3535 4th Ave S.) on January 20, 2021. During the fight Chin stabbed Collins. When victim fled the apartment, Chin followed him and shot him.

Collins was transported to Bayfront Health, where he was pronounced dead. The investigation into the murder is ongoing.

Our emergency communications center received a call around 5:28pm today with a report that a person had been shot in 3500 block of 4th Ave. S. Officers responded and found Mitchell Collins (DOB 11/19/1991) critically injured. He was transported to Bayfront Health where he was pronounced dead.

The suspect left the scene but was located by officers and detained.

Investigators believe the two men were familiar with each other and got involved in an altercation that led to Mr. Mitchell being critically injured.

The investigation into the details of Mr. Mitchell's death is ongoing and if anyone has information about this case, we ask that they reach out to SPPD by calling 727-893-7780. Or anonymous tips can be sent by texting the letters SPPD and your tip to TIP-411.

The St. Petersburg Police Department is investigating a fatal shooting in the 3500 and 3600 block of 4th Ave. S, after receiving a call (at 5:28pm) of a person shot there.

One man was transported to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The public is not believed to be in any danger at this time.

The investigation is underway and anyone with information is encouraged to contact the St. Petersburg Police Department by calling 727-893-7780 or by sending an anonymous message via text by texting the letters "SPPD" to TIP-411.
